September 2009 School of the Month

September 1, 2009 -- Houston Elementary School in Talladega has been selected as the September School of the Month in the Cash for the Classroom Program. The faculty and staff are very excited about this honor and have planned a number of activities to help raise money to replace some worn out playground equipment at the school.

Pam Cheatwood from FNB presents a check for $942 to Houston Elementary School Teachers Karen Curlee, LaKesha Curry, Cheryl Washington, Kristie McCormick and Dr. Dolia Patterson, Principal. The money was raised with a Hat Day, blue jeans Fridays for teachers, and through donations from friends of the school as well as customers and employees from The First National Bank.

The school is planning a month long penny drive with several competitive factors. Each grade level will be competing against the other grade levels for the most raised, and the upper level grades (4-6th grades) as a whole will be competing against the lower grades (K-3rd grades) to see who can raise the most money this month.

In addition, the faculty and staff will be allowed to wear blue jeans every Friday in September for a $5 donation. The school is also planning a "Hat Day" this month that will allow students to wear their favorite hat to school if they donate $1 to the fundraiser.

The staff hopes to raise enough money to replace some of the equipment at the school playground that has become weathered and worn out over the last few years. Replacement of this equipment will give the school more areas for the children to have outdoor activities and physical education, an important part of each child's educational well being, not to mention a place to burn off some of that excess energy many young children posses. If enough money is not raised in September, the staff plans to continue their fund raising efforts until the project can be completed.

The staff will be announcing the School of the Month honor at the August 31st Parent & Teacher Association meeting in hopes of kicking off a good effort for the fundraiser.
